Why do I relate to and love Brittana?
I relate to it because I fell in love with my best female friend when I was 16, and she knocked me back because she had a boyfriend at the time. I was literally Santana. Me and said best friend pretty much had a relationship behind her boyfriend’s back (nothing sexual, just kissing) but she kept going back to him - a la Brittany with Artie ‘I can’t break up with him, it wouldn’t be right’. Ever since Hurt Locker, I have been emotionally invested in this couple. Maybe it’s because I can finally identify with a character on a show with regard to that part of my life, or maybe it’s because I want Brittana to be endgame because I couldn’t have my relationship. Either way, the Brittana relationship means more to me than a fictional pairing should.
Why do I love Brittana? I love what they do to each other. I love how Brittany stands by Santana and reassures her of everything, every step of the way. I love how Santana lets her walls down for Brittany and protects her at every opportunity. When they’re with each other they’re just being themselves, no hiding or acting. They’re just Santana and Brittany. They complement each other so well – they are complete opposites but they understand each other like no-one else does. I know that Santana will pull through this rough patch and get her girl, and I know that Brittany will be hers, proudly so. There’s only so long you can deny fate.
Finally, as a footnote here, I have equal (if not more) love and admiration for HeYa. HeYa make Brittana what it is, and I will forever be thankful to them for that. For their chemistry, for their emotion and for their love.
